What to expect from a career in Logistics Management
Starting a career in logistics requires many skills – attention to detail, organization, time management, computer proficiency and much more. Logistic programs at Ontario colleges prepare students for the challenges of a logistics career, while also equipping them with the flexibility necessary to work in a variety of different industries and to handle different situations at any given time.
If you’re up to the challenge of a career in logistics, here’s what you need to know.
Logistics Courses
There are many different aspects to logistics programs, but courses typically fall into these three study areas:
- Mathematics and Finance. Logistics requires a good grasp of numbers, so mathematics, finance, economics and statistics will all be part of a logistics program curriculum.
- Marketing and Communications. Part of working in the logistics industry is getting your name out there on a local and global level. Marketing and communication skills, such as oral presentation, professional writing, wired communications and more will help students get comfortable promoting their businesses and presenting themselves to the public.
- Logistics Management. In courses geared to the logistics industry, students will learn to manage supply chains, ensure the availability of materials, create transportation plans, arrange storage and receiving options for finished goods and much more.
General Logistics Program Requirements
Ontario college logistics programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English and math credit.
Logistics Jobs and Salaries
Graduates of logistics programs have a number of career options open to them, including:
- Inventory Management
- Transportation
- Packaging and Distribution
- Import / Export
Job opportunities exist in manufacturing and service industries as well as in government operations. Logistics program graduates have an average starting salary of around $36,000 per year, with the potential to make $50,000 to $80,000 at the managerial level.
